Achieve Goals - The
'must-do' First Step
Dr David McDermott
Why people fail
There are lots of things people would like to have, a spacious house, a
nice car, a better job, or simply a raise, or a particular relationship.
And they delude themselves into thinking that when they achieve goals
they have set, they will do more of the things they really like. And
when they are doing the things that they want to, then they’ll be happy,
content and satisfied.
And somehow, when they finally achieve these goals, they are somewhat
trapped into doing more of the things they have been doing. Sometimes
it's because of time constraints or the notion that they are unable to
do without the money to be able to afford these things. And the cycle
continues, ‘When I have the money, I’ll do it…’ or ‘I’ll get to it when
I have more time…’, ‘Things will change when I get the next promotion…’
In many ways this is an attempt to live life backwards.
Changing advice
There is much written nowadays about how to get things, how to set and
achieve goals using various techniques, how to have wealth and riches in
your life. Some of it comes in the form of lists of things to be doing,
the idea being that if you do what successful people do, you can be
successful. And too often, this does not seem to cut the mustard.
So more and more of the advice now is about starting with a particular
mindset. There is a realizations that simply ‘doing’ is not working in
terms of allowing people to have what they want. We’re told that it is
important to think in a particular way, what’s required is to develop
the same beliefs and think like successful people and then it'll be
easier to achieve goals and we can have everything.
What works
In truth, the only thing that works is be-do-have. Be who you most know
yourself to be, and then you make decisions to learn to do what’s
required, in order to have the things you want to have. The suggestion
is that you be yourself, and everything follows on from that.
And the question that underlies that is how do you do that. What lets
you know you are, so that you can just go and be?
What sustains you from the inside when all else falls away?
What has to be true of you so that all your skills and abilities are
instantly available?
In your best moments...
We all have times in our lives when we are on top form, when things are
going just right, and there is no sense of anything missing or left out.
Living is effortless... There is a wonderful sense of well-being and
tissues and organs pulse and throb with renewed vigor. Without thinking
or even trying, things happen. Like this, there is a sense of being on
track... you achieve goals quickly and easily...
When you begin to operate and make decisions like this, several things
happen. Because the things you want for yourself are influenced by your
way of being, the things you choose for yourself when you are ‘like
this’ will be things you choose for yourself, rather than what others
think you should have.
Your own personal goals
When these choices are a match and a fit for who you are, your whole
being becomes organized around making these futures come true. And
whatever the goals you want to achieve, that career change, or the house
or car, there is a sense of joy and excitement and ease in organizing
your self in this way.
Being and doing
Operating like this, the distinction between ‘being’ and ‘doing’ becomes
blurred so that as your being unfolds, the things to be doing emerge.
And at one and the same time, the things that you do allow you to become
who you most want to be. So who you are determines what you do, and what
you do allows you to manifest even more of who you are.
When you achieve goals this way, they are actually what you want to be
doing! You are not doing these things to get to what you'd love to be
doing. You are actually doing it...
Possibilities multiply
Coupled with this, the sense of time is altered so that an extraordinary
awareness develops of how the present meets the future, allowing future
potentialities to become realized now.
What becomes possible is the ability to deliberately and intentionally
shape who you become, to align with your personal mythology so that by
simply being ‘like this’, you naturally do different things. And, of
course, what you do determines what turns up in your life...
Aligning yourself first, and then partnering with the environment in
this way, fertility abounds... and the magic of living enters the whole
of your life...
"Come to the edge" he said
"We can't, we are afraid"
"Come to the edge" he said
"We can't, we will fall"
"Come to the edge" he said
And they came
And he pushed them
And they flew.
