You wake up one morning and realize that the person you used to be is just plain gone and I mean gone in a good way because it was time for change. You spent so much time trying to fix what you thought was broken about yourself by keeping positive and giving thanks for every small success, all the while knowing in the back of your mind you could always do better. Then one day you find all your hard work has paid off, you are no longer the person you used to be. You are shedding the old and it now time to create the new.
What do you do when you do wake up and the person you used to be is just plain gone? The attitude, the style, the life that person lived no longer works for you. What do you do when you wake up and your life is an empty page? A clean slate (Tabular Rasa,) an opportunity to really create the person you have always wanted to be. You might be confused at first, or let me say you will be confused at first but here are a few suggestions to guide you through this journey.
How to Reinvent Yourself
- Give thanks for the opportunity. Not too many people are faced with the challenge of creating fresh new start. It is a “fork in the road moment”, a time when you have two choices: One choice is where you will be total control of your life and how you decide to live it and the other is your choice not to make use of this opportunity.
- Decide who you want to be. This is where you pick all the traits, behaviors, attitudes of the person you always wanted to be and make them yours. If you are starting with a clean slate then you are not sacrificing anything. Think about it, if you could be anyone in the world who would you be? How would you live? How would people treat you? How would you treat people? How would you dress? How would you carry yourself around this world? What would your chose to do with your life? What would you do differently this time?
- Be honest with yourself. Is this person who you really want to be? If the answer is yes, then continue reading, if the answer is no, then go back to number two. If you know who it is you want to be then it is time to create this person.
- Make a list of exactly who you want to be. This is where you get very specific, this is where you look at every detail of your new life and the benefits it holds for you. You are looking at a lot of very personal questions you will have to ask yourself. Now write them down. The Personal Vision Workbook
, is a great tool to help you with this part of your journey, it helps you spell out exactly who you are; your values; your personal mission and more. It is a journey of self discovery that will help you learn a lot about who you really are, how you want to live and how you want to be treated. The book has a lot more questions than you would ask yourself during this journey.
- Do your homework. What changes do you need to make in your life today to welcome this new persona that you have created? As hard as it may seem people do change, it is called growing up: you grow up and become someone new. Now during your process of growing up, you still have ties to your old life, your family, your friends, your job, your home, your clothes and everything else that belonged to the person you used to be. How will the people in your life react to the new you? This is not the time to burn bridges, this is the time to be sensitive to the people around you because in this case you are the only one going through these changes and in most cases these changes will be news to the people in your life. Some of you will find that you have outgrown friends and maybe your job. What happens to a person that wakes up one morning and has to make a whole new set of friends? I figure it will be much like moving to a new town, life goes on. As for the job, you can always do better.
- Clean house. What do you need to do to become this person? Do you need clean house? I know this new person you are creating doesn’t want to live with the clutter (both mental and physical) of your old life. Perhaps it is time to call the Salvation Army or the dump truck? The Law of Vacuum, states, when you get rid of something in your life you create a vacuum for something new. Get rid of the old and make room for something new, better and something you have invited into your life of your own free will. There is another law you will be using at this point, the Law of Correspondence, as within as without and vice versa. What does that mean and how does it help you? The law states that whatever is going on inside you is reflected in your environment and that your environment is a reflection of what is going on inside you. You change the way you think your environment changes but here is the great part if you change your environment you change the way you think, this law helps accelerate the process, helps you get to your goals faster. Housecleaning is going to reinforce the new you. Be brutal, take a scrubbing brush and clean out the old.
- You need an action plan. Make an action plan. You need to start living as this new person immediately. Though a lot of the items listed will not happen immediately there are some things you can start doing now. You can make the list of the person you want to be. You can start an action plan to make the changes in your life over the next few weeks. You can start doing something now there is no need to wait.
- Make a promise to yourself that you will see this through. The new you will never make a promise to yourself that you will not keep. Do you see the blessing? How many times do you actually get up one morning and realize you can change your life for the better, you will change and you have changed? You don’t want to look back on this day and think: If only I had done it then.
This is not a wish list, it is a reality check, we watch makeover shows and wonder what happens to this person after they get the new clothes, after they get the new look or the new home or find themselves suddenly famous or rich? What happens to the person who wakes up one morning and their old life is just plain gone? They have to create a whole new person to deal with this whole new situation, that’s what they do. If they don’t, well, you only have to read the tabloids or watch the news to find out the consequences and in most cases you hear nothing, nothing at all.
