Are You a Financial Illiterate?
As it turns out April is Financial Literacy Month in the US, I wish I could say I am that “with it” and knew all about it before I dedicated this month to finance and wealth building, but I didn’t. In fact I dedicated this month to finance and wealth building because I was working on the Law of Abundance. And, since I am in no way, shape or form that knowable about personal finance, I can balance my checkbook, I thought it prudent to share with you some great blogs and posts from people “in the know.”
Here are a few blog posts dedicated to helping you improve your financial life. I should say these blogs are the ones a “regular person” like me found and was able to understand what they were talking about, okay may be I am not so regular but these are the sites I hope will make my Financial Literacy Month worthwhile.
Saving and Investing: Introduction from Get Rich Slowly by JD – I like the fact that JD is starting with the words “Introduction”, I look forwarding to learning all I can this month, by the way, he also has short videos by Michael Fischer, author of Saving and Investing: Financial Knowledge and Financial Literacy that Everyone Needs and Deserves to Have!, talking about the importance of saving and investing, great. Thanks JD.
My Personal Finance Journey: This blog started in 2003 detail a brave journey to financial freedom by age 40 and so far they seem on track. This is an exemplary story for anyone trying to set financial goals, you should check it out and see how they are doing it.
My Money Blog written by a regular Joe like me and you, talks about managing his money, I especially liked the article: Are You A “Maestro Of Money Management”? Why? Because I am sucker for lists and I plan on spending a lot more time on this site learning.
It would not seem right, to me at least, to write about financial literacy without talking about where you currently stand. Checking out Getting Finances Done, I came across this article: How to create a zero-based budget, I thought “What the ……. is zero-based bug…” and there was the answer right in front of me. I love this post it is the first one I can truly say, “Yes, I can do this right now.” In other words, don’t ask me to explain what an IRA is, even with a 401k; I don’t care, well at least until this month.
All Financial Matters by JLP answers all questions you might have on personal finance, budgeting, asset allocation, 401K, IRA, cash flow, insurance, financial planning, portfolio management, etc. No, I do not plan on asking AFM about IRAs, I already checked out Wikapedia, see I am learning already.
Free Money Finance a site to help you grow your net worth, I simply liked this site because I could understand and enjoyed what I was reading, without feeling lost, the first step to learning is enjoying what you are reading right? Check out this site, it is a good place to start saving your dollars.
So much for Financial Literacy Month, I have learnt more today than I cared to learn about finance in the last three years or so. Is it a bad thing that I am completely intimidated by these websites? Yes!
I know what they are talking about or trying to say but still I don’t get it. I am well educated (at least I think so), I know how to hold my own intellectually anywhere but ask me to read anything financial and you might have better luck asking me to read hieroglyphics. If memory serves me well, I passed Finance class in university but I would rather talk about Universal Laws, the power of the mind, dream interpretation, Feng Shui, html or css. Oh well different strokes for different folks, this month should really be about facing your fear, good luck with the Financial Literacy Month I hope by the end of this month we can all watch Bloomberg TV or that screaming man on CNBC, understand and care about what they are talking about.
Cheers

Glad you found the zero-based budget useful. It seems like an appropriate month for financial literacy month since many of us will be getting tax returns and will have a nice chunk of money to accelerate our financial goals.
Thanks for a great article Sam.
