Change Your Thoughts Change Your Life

I have not been able to get the thought (pardon the pun) that we have 60,000 thoughts a day running through our minds. Then a couple of weeks ago I reread the article and realized that of that 60,000 thoughts only 10% are new thoughts we have as a result of our daily interactions with new people, new situation and new experience, the remaining 90% are thoughts we repeat day after day after day and have probably done so for years and years.

So you ask: Why is this important?

In the course of several years in the study of personal development I have come to the irrefutable conclusion that: The mind creates everything, I should say that YOUR MIND CREATES EVERYTHING, if you have ever read anything about personal development you will realize that this is nothing new. If you have never read anything self-help then you need to know this. I have researched, questioned and tested this conclusion for years and I am finally convinced that it is a fact. Your life today is an amalgamation of your dominant thoughts. Your dominant thoughts are a result of your life’s experiences and I am not talking about last week, I am talking about your entire life, the things you remember, the good, the bad, the things you have forgotten and the memories you have suppressed.

So I have come up with a new theory, if you are repeating 90% of the same thoughts daily and your life isn’t where you want it to be, then perhaps it is time to tap into that 90% and find the non-constructive thoughts that you are repeating daily and create a ripple, shake things up a little. That 90% has been sitting pretty for years and years while you suffer through life working hard to create change and going nowhere, maybe that is where the answer to lasting positive change and creating the life of your dreams are. Perhaps it is time to start chipping away at the parts of that 90% that is not working for you. Find a new positive, creative thought to replace one of the old stagnant useless or harmful in some cases ones. Well it is time to do something about it.

The Thought A Day Breakdown
 Total thoughts a day – 60,000
 Total new thought – 6,000
 Total dominant thoughts repeated daily – 54,000 (some of these thoughts are good and some are not, we are going after the ones that are destructive and non-productive.)
 Thoughts per minute – approximately 40
 Same old thoughts per minute – 36

I believe the key to change lies in affecting that 54,000 dominant thoughts a day and that is where I want to create ripples, scramble it up a bit, make those thoughts feel less comfortable, practice a little Universal Law of Substitution.

How A New Thought A Day Works:
1. We declare that we leave the 6,000 new thoughts a day as is. Those thoughts are life and new experiences happening.
2. We go after that 56,000 same old thoughts a day (the 90% dominant thought) and decide to introduce a brand new positive, creative new thought each day.
3. These new thoughts are not affirmations to be repeated, they are affirmative as in positive and constructive but we use them as random thoughts.
4. At the start of a day pick a new thought – “On day one I picked “Life is easy.” Every time I noticed a lull in my day (a moment when I am aware that I am not thinking of anything specific. This is usually the moment one of those 90% dominant thoughts start to play in my head) I would think, “Life is easy.” Going through daily chores, I would think “Life is easy” at random times I would think “Life is easy” a week has passed and “Life is easy” has become a dominant thought in my head. I know a useless thought has been replaced with a powerful one.”
5. On the next day pick another thought.

6. Or can decided to keep using the first thought until it become an unconscious thought then pick another.

The whole point of the exercise is to affect change in your dominant subconscious thoughts. Even though there might not be room for one more thought in your brain (so you think), the hope is that maybe one powerful new thought can cancel out one old useless, negative thought and start create ripples of change in your mind. It is a theory and it is worth a shot isn’t it.

So I have decided that each day for a month, I will post a new thought on my blog: A New Thought A Day in the hopes that I will tap into a set or pattern of thought that I unconsciously created during some dark times in my life and start to rewrite the programming. If you find yourself needed something new to think about visit my blog I am sure you will find something new to think about.

Good luck and I will see you tomorrow with a new thought.

Cheers,

What a great idea! Where did you get these numbers?

    Cathy,
Great question, I got the number from several articles I read while doing the research for my writing a couple of years ago and probably a few books I have read over the years. Though the numbers vary from time to time, I think what is important to focus on is the thoughts that remain constant day to day (the 90%). Think about it, nine out of ten thoughts we have everyday are the same ones. I have seen some quote the number of thoughts higher or lower what stays the same is the number of thoughts that are constant.

Thanks for a great question I am glad that your question was the first to come up.

Thanks for commenting and have a great day.
