Do Not Fall Into the Recession Trap Prevention is Better than a Cure
Posted on July 15, 2008

Times are hard, there is talk of recession, blah, blah, blah. I don’t turn on the news because I don’t understand how they can try to sensationalize the what is going on in the US today. It also helps that Jon Stewart decided to take two weeks off so I just don’t turn the TV on. However, yesterday, while trying to find my favorite cartoon, one of the cable news stations had footage of people lining up in front of banks and headlines in newspapers listing more banks going out of business.
There is a saying in African, when someone wants to emphasize a point, (something may be lost in translation) but it goes “How many ears have you got?” In other words, LISTEN UP!
Those idiots in the news are trying to sell advertising; they are in the business of making money for some fat cat that will never feel the crunch on filling a Toyota Camry with over $80.00 worth of gas. They will never understand that the same amount of money you used to buy four bags of groceries now only affords you two bags.
What next, I bet you by the end of summer we will have pictures of people in “soup lines.” What the hell is wrong with these people.
Where the hell was the press when Countrywide was going crazy with the home loans to warn us not to do it, you have to understand that these organizations are not watching out for you, they make more money when you panic. Now the streets are empty with people moving out of cities because they just can’t afford living there.
Yes, I am pissed, I refuse to mention the government in all this, and yes, we should take some of the blame too. However, that has happened it is done, it is now time to plan for your future. The press is doing its work, they are making money they are selling newspapers.
Take Responsibility for Your Life During this Time
This is why I am writing this post, don’t let the irresponsible images you see in the press create a poverty consciousness in your life that is an even worse setback. Learn from people that have pulled themselves from the brink, I found this article today by Steve Pavlina, What I Learned From Going Bankrupt in My 20s That Proves to Be Immensely Valuable in My 30s, read it and focus on what he did to get through his setback. There are important lessons there:
Our collective consciousness finds it easier to accept the negative, which is why the news sells, but with these simple steps, you can change your focus and take responsibility. As opposed to focusing on the negative just try the three simple things Steve talks about in his article (great article by the way). Stay positive, be grateful, and use the tools you have right now effectively and you will create your ideal life.
There is an awesome scene in one of the Austin Powers movies, when a steamroller is traveling less than 5 miles an hour is about to run a man standing 20 feet way over and he stands there and screams for what seems like forever.
I digress, what I am trying to say is; don’t wait until the steamroller runs you over before you do something. Prices are increasing our salaries are not, you need to start to do more to take care of your needs. You should not focus on your failures, or loses, that is all in the past. What you should be doing is doing whatever you can to make a positive turn in your life now, you should work on being able to afford gas at whatever the cost, look around you, people still travel, people still shop, people are still enjoying life, people are starting businesses and people are creating success in their lives. No one is saying you must only have one source of income. No one is saying you can’t get out from under a pile of debt. Everyone goes through a failure of some kind, and if you are lucky you can see it coming and get out of the way. Remember if one person can do it, everyone can.
So I ask you to Listen Up: We can all sit and let the recession happen to us or we can use the power that we were born with to prevent it all together.
PS
The news really irritated me yesterday and stayed with me until I read steve’s article today, I hate being affected by the news but I just simply can not understand how such irresponsible images can be allowed. Please don’t fall victim to these images we all know the Universe provides for us abundantly, there is no scarcity.
I am making a promise never speak of “a recession” again, I am able to detach myself from the news but occasionally fall prey when I worry about its effects on people. I also promise to stop worrying about you, I know you will take responsibility for yourself and create your own truths.
Thanks for listening to my little rant about the state of things, remember focus on the positive, give thanks and do something effective.
Later…
PLEASE & Thank You

Tim,
Thanks for taking the time, look forward to hearing from you again…
Not only is all the recession talk not productive, but it successfully distracts us from other issues and from making personal progress toward our goals.
You’re absolutely right that no matter what the economy some businesses are thriving, some people are succeeding and life is good for many. We all have the responsibility to seek our happiness from within without being tarnished or lead astray by what’s going on around us. It’s certainly a challenge, but a worthy one.
Thanks for your comment Flora, you are right about the challenge, but with a little, okay a lot of hard work, one can ride the wave. It is something we all need to do.
Cheers,
