Prepare to Change Your Life – What to Do Even Before You Start

Posted on August 4, 2008

Preparing to change your life is an essential step for success so even before you start a course, program or big change in your life here are some steps that will help prepare for that road ahead. Sunrise Paddling on the North Canadian River
These steps will give you the boost you need and set you up for success in whatever endeavor you are about to begin. I have said in the past that we are building a solid foundation so think about it as a “Learn to crawl before you run approach.” I do not mean to say this is the “lazy, laid back” approach to personal development. It is a “You will NEVER find yourself back here” approach to personal development.

I am not providing tools for mediocrity; I am providing tools for action. Just a word of caution, once you start this process, the Universe will take over. When I say, “Universe,” I mean the Law of Attraction. This is why I have chosen to include this step in the process. Really all you need to do is make a commitment to change, once you think it, the process starts, unlike you (or should I say your former self since we are turning a new leaf today) the Universe will keep its promise to give you everything you ask for. The reason I insist on using the words Solid Foundation, is that without one, anything, good or bad will knock you off your feet. It is all about being prepared to receive.

God is in the details, success is all about building a solid foundation and here are steps you need to start changing your life with a solid footing. You can do these steps in a day or you can do them in one week but no more than one week.

Become the Most Important Person in Your Life

It is time to take back your life, no more watching it pass you by. Become an active participant and take the bull by the horn. That is why I am writing this post before we delve deeper into creating a solid foundation for your life. It is sometimes hard to see yourself as important especially if you have put your life on the back burner in order to help other or because life has just turned out that way. Well I am here to tell you “No More.” It is unfair to you, it is unfair to everyone around you and since God put you on earth do a lot more I am sure it is unfair to God. This post is just the first step to becoming the important factor in your life, my goal, hope and intention is to light a little fire in you to start that roaring flame that is going to be your life.

Make a Commitment to Do Something
Most of us are used to putting ourselves last, you think, “well it is just me, what is breaking one more promise.” I will tell you something, that one more promise adds up and adds up and before you know it, it will be a lifetime spent breaking promises to yourself. You can not spent the rest of your life trying to “lose 10 pound this month, clear that clutter, get a new job or get out of that bad relationship.” Make a commitment to yourself that it is time to change and you will do it for yourself.

Ponder Your Life
Take time no more than two days to really sit down and think about your life, start a journal or to do list; just write down your discoveries. What are you trying to discover? You are trying to discover you. We will keep it at that, we are not trying to derail your progress before you start. We are simply trying to give you a solid footing so you can take the first step. Now, pondering your life is not an excuse to fall into a depression, no, no, no, it is taking a look at your current situation to figure out where you are and what you would like to change. Most of the time things are never as bad as they seem. I often say, “When you get to the lowest point in your life and you don’t do something “life” will hand you a shovel.” Things can always get worst, let us start with a ray of light, hope, that is what we want to get from the pondering exercise: HOPE.

Accept and Move On
Accept your life as it is, these are the facts, now it is time to do something about it. I love Feng Shui for the simple fact that I get to draw a plan of my home and circle in red, use whatever color you like, the areas of my home that need most work: the hallway, the bedroom etc. Then you break down each area to eight facets… but that is not the point I am trying to make. What I am saying is, you can look at an overview of your life now and say, I hate my job (fact) and I will do something about it (solution). Accepting and moving on is review the results of a fact finding trip and figuring out what to do with the information.

Think Before You Act

You are not going to get up today and quit your job that would be jumping off the diving board before checking to see if there is water in the pool. At this point, remember I said preparing for change could be one day or one week, what you have is a starting point. You can confidently say, I am in San Francisco, I don’t know where I am going but I have a good idea of where I am right now. One a list of 1-10 things you need to do to build a solid foundation this is step “-1”, yes, you might be in San Francisco but you need a street number and address to pinpoint your actual location. This exercise is about getting a rough idea of where you are. We will go into more details later.

Start to Think of What Your Ideal Life Would Look Like

How do you really want to live? Create a picture of your ideal life, where would you live, what would you do for living, what would you do for fun and what would you do to nurture your mind body and soul. This should not be so hard, in fact, make it a fun activity. My ideal life usually starts with my fantasy bathroom. Create an ideal life that brings a smile to your face you are not thinking how, you are simply thinking what.

Balance Yourself
Balance yourself, you are about to embark on a positive life changing journey, you will be setting out on solid footing. To get solid footing you will need to go inward, find a good self-affirming prayer, an affirmation, a symbol anything you need to center yourself and find balance. Whenever things get shaky, find your balance, take a few moments to remember your commitment to yourself, think about your current situation, and think about the place that you want to be. By the time you are done you should be feeling balanced again.

It is all about staying on the path and these steps are just the beginning.

I love your blog, and this article in particular! I’ve just jumped off that cliff, and yes, it’s amazing how the Universe works.

I’ve experienced it a few times in the past, and just recently again. Once the thoughts go in a certain direction, things seem to arrange themselves to align with them. Fascinating!

I think I’ll do some of your steps retroactively!

    Thanks!

Elizabeth, I am so with you on this one, sometimes you start change and feel like you are jumping off a cliff, atleast doing this you have time to survey what the cliff looks like, the depth of the water and then you jump.

    Thanks Tabs
