Tips to Improve Your Intuition

Posted on September 2, 2008

“Follow your gut” everybody, says that but only very few of us actually do “Follow our guts”. Colors
There are so many people out there that want to tell you what to do, how to live, who to love, what is right and what is wrong, myself included. It really should all start and end with you. Everyone comes to a crossroad in their lives and has to make a decision, where do you start?

Gut, Intuition aren’t they the same thing? Technically, they are, but we tend to think of intuition as more spiritual and your gut, well that is what detectives use, they follow the clues. So follow the clues and make more enlightened decision, the only person that benefits is you.

While you should learn to use your intuition, it is a lot harder to do with the constant noise in the world we live in today. I do not have the discipline to meditate consistently. I am seriously working on that one. Quite time in my world is writing without the TV on, still the noise from the outside world and the world in my head does not give my mind enough quite. Though I must say I have been lucky when it comes to my intuition, I think I was born with an innate ability to connect to my intuition without much effort on my part. I keep wondering what would happen when I do make an effort but that is a story for another Blog.

If your intuition is yet to kick in to the point that you would consider it mastered or you just do not trust the little voices in your head, here are some other ways you can use your conscious and subconscious when it comes to making a decision.

Read People’s Body Language
You will be pleasantly surprised at how much people give away with their body language. When speaking to a person look at their body language, does the smile get to their eyes. Smirks are a dead give away to watch your back with people. Did they frown when they first saw you, or did they smile? Do they pull away or hide something? Positive or negative if you look close enough you can see what a person really feels in their body language. You just have to look for it.

Listen to What People Say about Themselves

Many, many people will tell you everything you need to know about them in the first few conversations you have. You simply have to listen to what they say about themselves. Most truths are hidden in jest, you have to filter the character trait clues a person leaves. I am not saying to be paranoid about the whole thing but people also tend to do these things on a subconscious level. If their subconscious wants you to know these things then you should willingly accept the gift.

History Repeats Itself
Always think, has this happened before? I am supposed to learn something from this particular incident that I did not learn the last time? If circumstances occur in your life that seems a little more than déjà vu then there is a lesson about that particular circumstance that you have not learned. A famous Kabbalah teaching say that certain event will keep repeating themselves in your life until you learn your lesson. My one fast rule is, when these situations occur is to stop, think, recall the events that happened the last time and do something completely different. At least this time I can know to expect a different outcome.

How Do You Feel?
This one is quite simple do you feel good or bad about a situation. How does a person make you feel good or bad? In this situation, I pull out the 80/20 rule. Life is not perfect but to use your feeling as an advisor you also have to understand that life has its ups and downs but the “ups” had better be 80% of the time.

Know What You Do Not Want*
This is my favorite, it saved my life or I should say it turned my life around. Do not settle. Do not accept crap from anyone including yourself. The only way you can do this, is know what you do not want. Now, do not get me wrong it works wonders if you know what you want. However, how many of us can conjure up a specific picture of our ideal life at the drop of a hat – We really should all be able to do this, seriously. In the event that you don’t know what you want, knowing what you don’t want is the next best thing. If something or someone shows up in your life and this thing or person is clearly listed on your “Things I Don’t Want List”* then by all means this is something you should seriously avoid.

* {Warning} Please do not write a “Things I don’t Want List”, don’t even focus on the thought, remember the Universe is listening and often, very, very often does not hear or see the word “don’t”. Everything you think of good or bad the Universe will give you.

Weigh Your Options

Do not make random gut reactions, think about what you are doing before, during and after you have done it. Your intuition might be on vacation but you brain is still functioning. Use your common sense when making a decision. Do not make rash decisions because you felt bad. Remember you have to weigh your options once again the whole frying pan to fire thing did not come out of nowhere.

Kismet Can Be Wrong Sometimes

Occasionally, a situation that seemed to be created at the perfect moment when all the stars lined up and the planets where in harmony. The bluebird sang and shooting stars filled the sky. WAKE UP! Most of the time you are only seeing what you want to see because you refuse to accept the truth standing in front of you. Don’t base important deacons in your life on the intangible. Use these few points I have listed above as a guide, you might even discover a few more, please feel free to share them with me.

One of our bloggers actually just posted about how to better your intuition through meditation. And one thing that I really liked about this post is that, like her, you’re encouraging people to think before they act. I think so often people think that trusting your gut means that you have to trust your very first instinct. But I think it’s probably better to first do a thorough gut check and THEN make your decision. Thanks for the great post! etc

etc, thank you so much for the comment, you are right about meditation improving your intuition, you get so much clarity from meditation. The one big reason I am yet to write an in-depth post about meditation is because I have been unable to keep a consistent meditation practice. I will be checking out your website also, I might get pointer from your intuition article.
