Get of Your Rut Today - 5 Simple Tips
Posted on September 12, 2008

Spend a couple of days feeling like crap because you have so much on your plate you wish you could throw out the plate. I get a couple of those every month and came up with an action plan of sorts to deal with those funky moments.
Stop for Five Minutes (or less) and Think
Stop beating yourself over the head for not getting stuff done and ask yourself this question: What is the most important thing I can do to make myself feel better?
If throwing out the to-do plate is not an option then what can you do? Send out five resumes, write 8 articles, write one article, finish this one project, exercise, tidy my room or create an action plan for the week. Whatever decision you make must make you feel like you are being productive and definitely has to get you out of this funk.
Complete One Project
Work on projects that have a beginning, middle and an end. You will feel so much better when you complete a project and can cross it off that dreaded to do list. The sense of accomplishment alone will put a smile on your face and rave up that “can do attitude” we all strive for.
Simplify your To Do List
Do you have a to-do list straight out of hell, I do. I have a tendency to forget things, I am working on fixing that, but I have to write everything down. So, my to-do list looks more like a journal than things I actually have to do. My solution: I call the to-do list a master list. I take the master list and come up with one main task, like “Upgrade my Blog” then I go through my to-do list and pull out all tasks that have to do with upgrading my Blog, everything else can wait. See, to-do list simplified, once the upgrade is done, I pick another milestone. It is all about baby steps here. I have tried the whole take over the world in one week thing and it just doesn’t work.
Create a Daily Routine and Stick to It
There are things you just have to do everyday, you get up and go to work or feed yourself. Even on days, you feel like crap, try to keep to your routine, once again getting out of a rut is all about feeling a sense of accomplishment and feeling good about yourself. Even if it is something as simple as getting to work in time, getting that workout in, or sticking to your healthy diet plan, these little accomplishments help.
Get Inspired
I am a great big advocate of finding inspiration wherever you can. If you have a book, cd, movie, documentary or friend* who inspires you into action use them, these are all tools to help you get out of a rut. When it comes to friends do not be an energy vampire, be considerate the fact that you need inspiration does not mean you need to suck it out of someone else. Also, when it comes to inspiration, get inspired and get your behind to work, don’t spend three days getting inspired that is just procrastination. Most inspiration should be instantaneous, if you are like me you just have to remember you have the tools.
